I knew the moment I read the synopsis of this book - I at least had to give it a try. I went at it with an open mind, in many ways assuming I would be let down (perhaps sometimes I am a bit of a pessimist) but the moment I read the first page I knew I may just enjoy this book.

The story follows Sarah, a teenager born into a Cannibal community, her parents are high in the colony's council, until the night of the big hunt, a hunt where the age is brought down and Sarah, who was previously two years too young, can now suddenly take part.

The hunt goes wrong, the city were waiting to take them on and many of the hunt party and hunted end up dead - even the leader of the Colony is found dead in the forest, with a bite mark in him.

It was the night that changed everything, as Sarah's parents become the leaders; she is sent to the Slaughter Shack and banned from any future hunts. In the slaughter shack she meets Troy a captive that starts a change in her, a change the eats away at who is was.

But the captive isn't quite who he seems (I admit at first I assumed he would be the love interest, the whole reason her views change) and the pilgrim party which has just returned seems odd - things are changing not just for Sarah, but all around her - there is unrest in the colony.

There one thing that confused me about this book was those first pages - they talk of a feast before the hunt - where the food is laid out in front of them alive, they tuck in and eat it - killing the victim in the process - which later seems to contradict with the fact Sarah seems to be new to killing and seeing the victims alive, when she is sent to work in the Slaughter Shack - of course I could just be missing something.
